Generation 3 Prelude Big Brake Conversion - Fitting The New Kit
Now the best part started…. fitting the new kit! Firstly the new bracket need fitting, this came complete with new mounting bolts and nylock nuts. For extra security I used a thread locking compound also.
You can see on the picture on the left why it was necessary to cut the hub, the hub interferes with where the caliper mounts to the bracket.
With the bracket mounted securely it was time to fit the new disc and things where starting to take shape. The new disc has no locating screws. Then the caliper was placed over the disc and secured to the bracket again with the bolts provided and using thread lock compound.
At this point I double checked all bolts where secure and tightened correctly.
Next it was time to fit the pads. This was a very simple task as the caliper is of a open type with the pads held in place with 2 x metal pins each with a single split pin that go through the top of the pad. Shown is view of caliper without pads fitted. So on the car it was simply a matter of “dropping” the new pads in. I also coated the rear of the pads with a copper based lubrication as well as the holes through which the pins passed to ensure they would not seize when I came to remove them.
With the Pads fitted it was time to remove the brake fluid line from the old caliper and fit it into the new. After securing the pipe in place I opened the top bleed valve on both side of the caliper and waited until the brake fluid ran out, then close both valves. All that remains is to bleed both sides of the caliper and change the fluid to ATE Super Blue. With the caliper bled, they looked ready to go. So it was on with the wheel and of to bed them in.
